Recently I started working with the Newport-Skaithos Club on creating a documentary to tell the story of first generation immigrants who traveled from Skaithos, Greece to Newport, RI. The relationship of the two island cities dates back one hundred years. In 1996 they made their connection official by becoming “sister cities.” There is an incredibly rich history that lives in the oral tradition of this vibrant community. On 3.22.14 the Skaithos Club held a gallery opening of photographs at the Seamen’s Church Institute to commemorate their heritage, and to celebrate their friendship with Skaithos. The event not only had amazing photographs but delicious Greek food (stuffed grape leaves!), and Greek dancing! Stay tuned for the upcoming documentary short.
